Plasticizers for Solid Polymer Electrolytes.
Abstract:
The ionic conductivity of a solid polymer electrolyte based on a lithium salt dissolved in a polyethylene oxide PEO host was significantly improved with the use of plasticizing agents and a lithium ion coordinating compound. Either a plasticizing salt, solvent or combinations of both were incorporated into freestanding solution-cast films of PEOxLiCF3SO3. The greatest enhancement of conductivity was observed when the plasticizing salt LiNCF3SO22 and a plasticizing solvent diethyl phthalate, dimethyl phthalate, or dimethylglycol phthalate were combined, with most notable improvement occurring below the melting temperature of PEO approx. 66 deg C. Addition of a low concentration of 6,6-dibenzyl-14-crown-4, a lithium ion coordinating compound, also improved ionic conductivity. Electrochemical stability was determined by cyclic voltammetry, showing that plasticizers were generally stable between 4.3 V and 1.5 V versus lithium. jg
