Abstract:

This report describes an evaluation of the effectiveness of synthetic voice Automatic Terminal Information Service ATIS messages in a simulated environment. The evaluation was conducted by ARINC and CTA, Incorporated, for the Federal Aviation Administration FAA Technical Center under contract DTFAO3-94-Q-00022. The evaluation consisted of a flight demonstration in the General Aviation Trainer GAT simulator at the FAA Technical Center, Atlantic City International Airport, NJ. The demonstration had the following objectives 1 Evaluate synthetic voice messages using subjective measures of speed, clarity and intelligibility, and overall quality, and 2 Compare the pilots responses to the synthetic voice messages with their responses to human voice messages. These objectives were achieved by evaluating subjective and objective measures collected from the pilots and cockpit observers during the flight demonstration.
