The 1994 Australian Defense White Paper: An American View,
Abstract:
Australia has seen a sea change in the global strategic environment with the end of the Cold War and the dawning of the Post Cold War Era. This change has called for a reassessment of its current state of defense policies and structures--particularly as regards U.S. foreign policy and strategy, combined with regional security arrangements. Australia has a profound need for reassessment of its National Security Strategy and diplomacy toward East Asia. The convergence of these factors has, in part, resulted in the release in 1994 of Defending Australia Defence White Paper, 1994. The Review reestablishes that the prime mission of the Australian Defence ForceADF is the defence of Australia. Maintaining Australias security must be pursued through a combination of defence in depth, regional engagement with Australias Southeast Asian neighbors, and continued close strategic partnership with the United States.
