Abstract:

Cleaning up the nations most dangerous hazardous waste sites will require the help of the parties responsible for the contamination. Federal funding alone, though substantial, is insufficient to tackle this serious and costly pollution problem. To obtain these responsible party cleanups in a timely and efficient manner, the Environmental Protection Agency EPA needs to have a vigorous and effective enforcement program. Concerned that this has not been the case, the Chairman, Subcommittee on Superfund, Ocean and Water Protection, Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, asked GAO to review EPAs enforcement program. jg
