Criteria for Use of Seal Coats on Airport Pavements

reportActive / Technical Report | Accession Number: ADA256785 | Open PDF

Abstract:

Seal coats are generally used to protect the pavement surfaces from oxidation and ingress of water to layers below. Additionally, seal coats on airport pavements are expected to protect the pavement from the potential damage of fuel spillage. This report describes the results of literature search conducted for this study. It also describes the information gathered from visits to eight airport sites located throughout the U.S. Samples of seal coat materials obtained from five airport sites were tested in the laboratory to determine their performance characteristics. Also, the characteristics of asphalt and coal tar seal coat mixes were tested under dry and wet freeze-thaw cycling to determine the effect of wet freeze-thaw cycling on cracking of sixteen different mixes. The results of all these tests are included in this report along with a summary and conclusions, and a list of recommendations.
