AMSP Course 2 Tactical Dynamics. NATO Interim Report: Employment Concepts for Light Infantry in Europe
Abstract:
The basic purpose of this study is to examine how light infantry divisions could be employed in a European high intensity environment. The study is not constrained to current war plans, but also examines very early deployment of light infantry divisions. The study has value for two reasons First, it takes a top down look. The utility of light infantry is examined from the perspective of strategy first, then operations, and finally tactics. This approach yields new findings about what battalions should be trained and equipped to do. Not surprisingly, they are not the same as those derived from a bottom up look. Second, experienced light infantry commanders looked at real corps sectors with real corps and echelons above corps planners to gain valuable insights about light infantry utilization.
