Intelligence Preparation of the Battlefield: Is It Worth the Effort?

Abstract:

The purpose of this study to determine the viability of the Intelligence Preparation of the Battlefield IPB process as a decision making tool. In order for IPB to be of practical use in decision making it must reduce uncertainty in a timely manner. Todays fluid battlefield belongs to the commander who can make and effect sound decisions faster than his opponent. Additionally, IPM must focus on the commanders needs and his plans. The study consists of four sections. The first establishes the role of intelligence from a theoretical and historical perspective. It seeks to establish the basic categories of information needs and to determine whether those needs are addressed by IPB doctrine. Section two examines the application of IPB doctrine to the military decision making process. Section three is an examination and analysis of the findings of Combat Maneuver Training Center and field training exercises regarding recent use of IPB in tactical planning. Section four completes the study with conclusions, recommendations, and implications for AirLand Battle-Future.
