Construction of Military Intelligence Military Occupational Specialty Taxonomy

In 1987, the U.S. Army Intelligence Center and School USAICS requested that ARI investigate a number of military occupation specialty MOS issues arising from the developement and introduction of new Intelligence Electronic Warfare IEW collection and processing systems. A missing component of this research has been the developement of an indepth taxonomy of the psychological processes and factors associated with each military intelligence MI and career management field CMF. This research note describes taxonomy developed to assess the suitability of MOS to meet the job performance demands of the introduction of new IEW systems. The taxonomy has three major levels job-level variables, MOS-level variables, and CMF-level variables. These levels assume a sequential process that starts with micro-level evaluation of the impact of job changes on soldiers tasks and leads to macro-level evaluation where the impact on MOS aggregates and CMF can be measured. The research note describes the technical approach and applies the taxonomy in describing the MOS of the 96 CMF.
