Simulating the Fog of War
Abstract:
This piece originally appeared in Fire Movement, Number 58, OctoberNovember 1988. Fire Movement is a magazine that reviews commercially published conflict simulations, and the piece refers extensively to such wargames. These games often differ substantially from the political-military games or intricate computer simulations typically undertaken in the defense- analytic community. Nonetheless, the piece presents a more generally applicable treatment of the types and importance of uncertainty in warfare. In addition, the article discusses how to modify the paradigmatic commercial wargame so as to represent more realistically the fog of war, and those modifications may also be applicable to some of the human-oriented games used in the defense-analytic community. kr
