Qualitative Fastener Standards: Procurement Issues

Abstract:

Counterfeit and substandard fasteners have severely impacted the Department of Defense and the nation. This thesis examines the issues involved. The primary issues examined are the background of the fastener problem, the development and use of standards and specifications, the specific standards used for fastener procurements and how they were applied. The FA-18 fastener selection process is reviewed. Occurrences at the Defense Industrial Supply Center relating to fasteners are presented. Potential preventive actions are discussed.
