The Utility of Selection for Military and Civilian Jobs
Abstract:
The major purpose of this report is to provide military policymakers with procedures for developing and evaluating realistic estimates of costs and benefits of alternative manpower selection and classification policies. Such estimates are needed to make rational choices in allocating scarce resources among strategies for improving organizational productivity. This report traces the technical development of current decision theoretic selection utility models. The description of selection is extended to introduce more complex classification decision situations that match individuals and jobs to maximize aggregate performance. An overview of the current military system for selecting and classifying manpower is presented along with a discussion of how exclusive focus on predicting validity reduces the efficiency of the ASVAB as a classification tool.
