Abstract:

The military services have been experiencing problems in the adequacy of their weapon systems diagnostic capabilities. Military standards and handbooks are an important factor in acquiring these diagnostic capabilities. The structure and content of existing standards and handbooks is not adequately supporting this process. This report contains specific modifications to 24 existing military standards and handbooks required to assure the acquisition of an adequate weapon system diagnostic capability. Of the proposed revisions to these 24 documents, three are critical to improving this acquisition process. They are a MIL-STD-2165, Testability Program for Electronic Systems and Equipments, recommended to address the programmatic requirements for a weapon systems entire diagnostic capability b MIL-STD-415, Design Criteria for Test Provisions for Electronic Systems and Associated Equipment, recommended to cover design criteria for a weapon systems entire diagnostic capability and c MIL-STD-1521, Technical Reviews and Audits for Systems, Equipment, and Computer Programs, recommended to emphasize, audit and review procedures for a weapon systems entire diagnostic capability.
