Abstract:

The goal of this research is to characterize the interaction of botulinum neurotoxin with membranes, and seeks to add to the field of study of proteinlipid interactions in general. A model system of study has been developed to define which portions of the botulinum toxin insert andor interact with artificial liposomes in order to define membrane-active portions of the molecule. This will enable a more defined study of the protein as it interacts with a bilayer through the use of protein and membrane probes to map the topography of the toxin in the membrane, and will also define possibly critical areas of the molecule which can be used as templates to produce artificial inhibitors of botulinum activity.
