Galvanic Corrosion Initiatives

In the past, there have been a number of material failures in Army equipment. Many of these failures were caused by galvanic corrosion. This research was performed to determine the effect of galvanic reactions on the mechanical properties of high strength materials in aggressive environments. Aluminum alloys, steels, and a graphite-epoxy composite were exposed to various environments, then tested to indicate whether the galvanic corrosion exposed to various environments, then tested to indicate whether the galvanic corrosion which developed was cosmetic or if it had an effect on the mechanical properties of the material. By doing this, the number of failures in military equipment could be reduced.
