Abstract:

The objective of the SIMA Pilot Powder Coating Station Service Test was to determine the feasibility of implementing a powder coating capability in Corrosion-Control Shops at the full-production level for all SIMAs under COMNAVSURFPAC. The test entailed the evaluation of facility requirements, industrial plant equipment, manning requirements, training, production procedures and quality control. A SIMA draft Process Instruction for powder coating was written and evaluated during operation of the Pilot Powder Coating Work Station. Recommendations are given in this report concerning the installation and operation of a Powder Coating Work Station in SIMA Corrosion-Control Shops, including guidance on powder resin selection and expansion of the list of authorized items to be powder coated. Site surveys for SIMAPearl Harbor and SIMANorfolk are also provided.
