Feasibility Study for a Computerized Serials Control System in the Defense Communications Agency Technical and Management Information Center.
Abstract:
This study was conducted to determine the need for, and the feasibility of using, an automated serials control system in the Defense Communications Agency Technical and Management Information Center. Three systems, OCLC, EBSCONET, and Wang List Processing were chosen as possible candidates for automating the serials records after it was determined there would be a database of up to 500 serials. EBSCONET had the necessary ordering, claiming and online displays of current subscriptions. OCLC provided a sophisticated prediction of arrival and automatic claiming function but did not have retrospective holdings information. The Wang system appeared to offer easy data entry and retrieval, as well, for storing data on holdings. All three systems offered some advantages to a library, but not full serials control. Further study was recommended by pilot projects to test the systems.
