Converging German elements surrounded two infantry battalions and drove off an American armored counterattack with heavy loss. The surrounded infantry held out for over two days but eventually attempted to break out on the night of 16-17 February. Only a handful of soldiers succeeded in reaching friendly forces, some of which were quickly caught up in the battle of Kasserine Pass. Author
