Abstract:

On 14 February 1943 the German Fifth Panzer Army in North Africa attacked elements of the US 1st Armored Division near Sidi bou Zid, Tunisia. Converging German elements surrounded two infantry battalions and drove off an American armored counterattack with heavy loss. The surrounded infantry held out for over two days but eventually attempted to break out on the night of 16-17 February. Only a handful of soldiers succeeded in reaching friendly forces, some of which were quickly caught up in the battle of Kasserine Pass. Author
