Abstract:

This research paper investigates how the design of a computer system can influence the manner in which people use that system. As people interact with a system they begin to have a feeling for the tasks they can accomplish with the system and how to accomplish these tasks most efficiently. This knowledge will be referred to as the users mental model of a computer system. The underlying assumption of the present research is that the design of a computer system can influence the quality of the users mental model of that system. A mental model can be appropriate or inappropriate for a given system which, in turn, influences performance with that system. Originator-supplied key words include Data bases, Experimental design, Man computer interface, Interactive graphics.
