Computer-Based Systems for Navy Classroom Training
Abstract:
This paper briefly summarizes the state of knowledge about 1 the effectiveness of computer-based instruction CBI, 2 where and how it is being used, 3 some cautions about over generalizing from these successes, and 4 what should be done to incorporate it appropriately into Navy training. CBI can be effective, but to use it properly, clear procedures are required to analyze needs, derive requirements, and match them with capabilities of computers. To assist in this process, computer-based aids for authoring instruction are needed along with a support system to provide standardization and distribution. There is much to be learned about how to design effective CBI and to determine where and when it should be used for military training. A programmatic research effort is needed to improve the technology.
