Abstract:

The Defense Mapping Agency, in cooperation with the United States Geological Survey and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, is sponsoring the development of a Global Positioning System geodetic receiver GEOSTAR. The receiver is capable of observing up to four satellites simultaneously by sampling segments of broadcast signals from different satellites in a time-multiplexing sense using a single dual frequency channel. The receiver system was designed to measure the geodetic coordinates of points to an accuracy of one meter and to provide first-order estimates of baselines of up to several hundred kilometers in length. In addition, the receiver can support positioning and attitude determination of geophysical survey platforms under low dynamic conditions. Descriptions of these applications are presented.
