Experimental Study of Dissociative Attachment in Optically-Pumped Lithium Molecules.
Abstract:
Details are presented of an experimental study which has as its goal the observation of lithium negative ions by the process of dissociative attachment in optically-pumped lithium dimer molecules. A description is given of a new lithium supersonic beam apparatus with a slit nozzle and gravitational recirculation of the molten lithium. The source operates up to 900 degrees C and yields a lithium density of 31 x 10 to the 14th power cm at 10 cm downstream from the slit. The beam density is modelled as a function of spatial coordinates. Two- and three-step photoionization of lithium dimers and lithium atoms has been performed using multiple, tunable nitrogen-pumped dye lasers. An electron density of up to 310 to the 10th power cm has been created in the beam.
