Abstract:

The Armys maintenance system, while designed to support wartime requirements, draws its basic data from peacetime experience. Repair parts are programmed based on normal operating failures. There is no tool to predict those additional parts required due to combat damage. Similarly, manpower is based on MACRIT--manpower authorization criteria as found in AR 570-2. This is applicable to wartime equipment usage rates, but it is an annual average that fails to explicitly recognize workload peaks or the replacement of combat damaged components during wartime. In recognition of these problems, the Combat Damage Assessment Model CODAM was developed to demonstrate the feasibility of predicting the logistic resources and elapsed time necessary to repair a given number of battle damaged M60A1 tanks. The model is designed to give the logistician a planning tool for estimation of the maintenance load, required repair parts, estimated time to repair, and the level of repair required. In turn, the tactical commander will have a better concept of expected equipment availability in relation to a given number of battle damaged tanks.
