Abstract:

Mixed layer depths defined in terms of each of four parameters temperature, sound speed, density and stability are determined for an area in the northern North Atlantic. The distributions of the mixed layer depth are broken down by season spring, summer and fall and by area Rockall Trough, Iceland Flank, Iceland-Faeroe Front. It is found that seasonal fluctuations in values of mixed layer depth are in excess of 40 meters fall deeper than summer. Variation in the values of mixed layer depth by area are only about 10 m but are also significant. The Iceland Flank mixed layers are deeper than the Rockall Trough or the Iceland Faeroe Frontal Zone mixed layers. The stability definition is found to be faulty in its present form and an increase in the significant peak criteria from 2 to 3 cycles per hour is suggested. The Iceland-Faeroe Frontal Zone has greater deviation in MLDs which affect the different definitions of MLD in a complex manner. Author
