Abstract:

At a time when the military forces are largely dependent on the quantity and quality of volunteers, the criticality of the role played by recruiters in meeting manpower supply requirements cannot be overemphasized. This report describes the development and validation of a battery of primarily paper-and-pencil instruments to identify those individuals most likely to become successful recruiters. Instruments contained in this battery include self- description inventories, biographical data, and vocational interest measures. The recruiter selection battery was administered to a geographically representative sample of Navy recruiters. Two primary measures of success were used Ratings gathered from supervisors and peers and production data i.e., enlisted accessions compiled over a 6-month period. The magnitude of the relationship observed between the scores of the experimental battery and the various performance criteria, particularly that of production, was sufficiently high to recommend that the battery be operationally implemented.
