The Effect on Blade Erosion of Injecting Air Ahead of a Cavitating Propeller.
Abstract:
Experiments are described in which air was injected ahead of a propeller operating at a cavitating condition in a nonuniform wake to determine the effect of air on blade cavitation erosion. Experiments were conducted with no air injected and with air injected at different locations ahead of the propeller for two air flow rates. The experimental technique and data collection method are described. The results show that the injection of air ahead of a cavitating propeller significantly reduces the amount of blade erosion. The amount of erosion was found to be dependent on the location and the amount of air injection. Author
