Abstract:

Describes an investigation that was undertaken to solve the problem of dust raised by military helicopter landings during field operations. Such dust clouds can cause damage to turbine engines as well as create a visual signature for drawing hostile fire. The goal was to develop a convenient, rapid, and inexpensive technique for stabilizing soil for helicopterVSTOL landing pads and expeditionary airfield runways. Conventional methods, such as concreting or asphalting, are considered much too expensive and time consuming for tactical use in the field. This report presents a detailed evaluation of the stabilization of soil by application of aqueous latex emulsion. The success of a given emulsion application was judged on the basis of one or more of the eight listed criteria. Author
