Abstract:

NATOs continued existence in its present form into the 21st century will depend on developments in a number of areas. By highlighting these areas of concern, this paper indicates measures which should be taken to shape our future role in the Alliance. NATOs existence has been based on the preservation of Western institutions and the provision of national security. These interests provide the foundation for NATO. However, a number of current issues and interests will have a bearing on the direction NATO takes in the future. Some of these are the strategy to provide European security the perceived threat Euro-communism energy separatism terrorism arms control the Greece-Turkey problem and member nations economies. These issues will affect the perceived need for the Alliance and the ability of its members to support NATO into the next century. From them, a basis for an alternative to NATO may emerge. Author
