An Analysis of the Role of Transportation in the U.S. Coast Guard Physical Distribution System.

The purpose of this study was to analyze how the United States Coast Guard utilizes transportation to effect the physical distribution of goods. The study examined the existing organizational, managerial, and financial structures of transportation and physical distribution within the Service, as well as the transportation management activities that occurred at the working level. The focus of this working level examination was the traffic management organization at two of the Coast Guards supply centers the U.S. Coast Guard Supply Center, Brooklyn, New York, and the U.S. Coast Guard Aircraft Repair and Supply Center, Elizabeth City, North Carolina. From analysis of the available information, it appeared that concerted efforts were being made at the working level to manage transportation effectively. The recommendations contained in this study have emphasized a realignment of authority and accountability for transportation management, in order to effect a greater integration of these working level efforts into the physical distribution system of the Coast Guard.
