Tapered Roller Bearing Development for Aircraft Turbine Engines.
Abstract:
Finite element methods were used to structurally analyze various potential cage designs for tapered roller bearings operating at 3.5 million DN. The race guided Z design exhibited the greatest strength. Short duration evaluation tests verified these findings. Performance tests were conducted to determine bearing loss characteristics and oil-off survival. Parameters investigated, which influence losses torque or heat generation, were speed, load, lubricant properties, lubricant flow rate and lubricant distribution. Oil-off survival tests were successfully run at 1.5 and 2.0 million DN. The bearing fatigue life tests conducted at 3 million DN showed a high degree of life scatter. The 90 percent survival level was 2.78 times the unadjusted catalog life expectancy. Author
