Abstract:
This thesis presents a parallel look at the command systems of the Union and the Confederacy from the beginning of the war until 1865. Emphasis is on the changes in the two systems as they each change and adapted to the conditions of the modern war. Problems encountered in the relationship between each nations military leaders and the political civilians leading each nation are examined. War departments of the Union and the Confederacy are discussed briefly. Development of the corps structures in both armies is also discussed.
