Abstract:

Automatic document storage and retrieval systems are currently available in a variety of forms. In a survey of the marketplace, these systems were compared for the storage of engineering drawings. They were characterized mainly by the type of memory device use--magnetic tape or disk, laser mass memory, microfilm, and microfiche. None matched the idealized system described in this report. New memory devices are under development homograms, ovonic memories, magnetic bubble memories, and vesicular film. A microfiche system for an existing engineering program, a magnetic tape or disk system for starting a new program, and a combination of the two for a large ongoing program are recommended. Author
