Blood Preservation Study.

Blood from human volunteers has been stored in CPD II citrate-phosphate-dextrose with adenine and with increased glucose. Twenty-four hour viabilities were at least 72 after 35 days of storage of whole blood. Red cells stored as packed cells also generally had satisfactory viability, but sometimes glucose was exhausted and the viability impaired. Packed red cells stored in BAGPM bicarbonate-adenine-glucose-phosphate-mannitol maintained 2,3-DPG for up to 42 days storage if internal carbon dioxide absorbers consisting either of blocks of silicone rubber containing calcium hydroxide or silicone rubber bags containing calcium hydroxide were included. The screen filtration pressure of such red cells was improved over that of blood stored in CPD or CPD II. Author
