A-B Plane PG Throat Inserts
Abstract:
An exploratory program was conducted to design and develop free standing a-b plane pyrolytic graphite throat inserts for rocket nozzles. Thermal analysis and structural analysis were conducted to define and establish design concepts for nozzle inserts. Free standing a-b plane continuously nucleated pyrolytic graphite cylinders were fabricated and characterized to determine the thermal and mechanical properties over range of temperatures from 70 F to 5000 F. Failure criteria were investigated and the predictions were compared with the results of pyrolytic graphite throat inserts which fractured during cooldown. The throat insert configuration was defined and thirteen deposition runs were made to produce the throat inserts. All inserts fabricated were unacceptable for nozzle testing due to cracks andor delaminations which occurred during cooldown.
