Abstract:

This report is intended to aid the transmission designer in selecting an overrunning clutch for use in a helicopter transmission. Preliminary sizing as well as detailed stress analysis procedures are presented for all aspects of spring, sprag, and ramp roller clutch designs. An example of the procedure for each clutch is included. Operation up to 20,000 rpm is feasible if the design procedures presented herein are followed.
