Abstract:

This thesis presents a case study in the modernization of existing bulk material storage facilities at the Naval Supply Center, Oakland. Using a physical random sample of material stored in the bulk storage branch, the author determined requirements for a modernized system. An overview of state-of-the-art material handling technology suggested several alternatives for the modernization. An economic analysis of these alternatives was made using the criteria contained in the Naval Supply Systems Command NSSC Publication 529 -- Warehouse Modernization and Layout Planning Guide -- and the NSSC Instruction 7000.10A of 29 Oct 1974 -- Economic Analysis and Program Evaluation for Resource Management. The recommended solution for modernizing this storage facility is a high-rise storage retrieval system using unmanned stacker cranes and transfer cars.
