Propoxyphene Abuse.

Darvon is a centrally acting analgesic with pharmacologic effects similar to morphine. The most common method of abuse is oral ingestion of a legally prescribed capsule, although it is also administered intravenously and by other exotic routes. Abuse entails serious medical risks, including the danger of death from overdose. Repeated high doses can produce psychological and physical dependence of the morphine type, as well as tolerance. Individuals in a young drug abusing population who take Darvon illicitly are likely to have histories of anti-social problems and multiple drug abuse. Counselors are alerted to the problem of Darvon abuse and to the importance of identification and treatment. The physicians role in preventing abuse by exercising judgement, caution, and restraint in prescribing the drug is noted.
