Abstract:
The study analyzes the Soviet invasion of Manchuria in August 1945 emphasizing the role played by the element of surprise. The analysis shows how the Soviets applied surprise against the Japanese at the strategic, operational and tactical levels, how the character of the element of surprise varied from echelon to echelon and how the outcome of the campaign reflected the results of surprise.
