Abstract:

The purpose of this informal evaluation of the Sikorsky S-62 amphibious, turbine-powered helicopter was to determine if state-of-the-art improvements exist in this helicopter that warrant consideration for current or future Army helicopters. The Sikorsky S-62 Amphibious Helicopter was flown by aviators of the United States Army Aviation Board, United States Army Aviation School, and United States Army Transportation Aircraft Test and Support Activity for a combined total of approximately ten flight hours in the vicinity of Fort Rucker, Alabama. The test period, in flying hours, was limited due to the short time this helicopter was available for testing. During the test period, emphasis was placed upon flight characteristics, operation of the T-58 engine, maneuverability on land and water surfaces and other significant features which indicate new developments in the state of the art. No significant state-of-the-art improvements exist on this helicopter that warrant consideration for Army helicopters.
