Abstract:

A technique is developed for evaluating and analyzing tactical intelligence systems by applying information theory or uncertainty analysis to obtain quantitative measures for uncertainty and information. Using basic information from the Table of Organization and Equipment of an army mechanized division and its probable deployment in a corps riverline defense, it is possible to show quantitatively how average uncertainty is affected by changes in the intelligence systems capability to detect equipment classes and improved resolution of detection within equipment classes. With information theory, it is possible to relate units to equipment which can be related to terrain which in turn can be related to other dimensions such as activity attack, defend, delay, etc and to various types of divisions armor, infantry, airmobile, etc..
