The Effect of Strain Rate and Temperature on Polymers.

Abstract:

The yield stress and elongation as a function of strain rate were investigated for two polyethylenes and two nylons. Both polyethylenes showed a higher degree of strain rate dependency up to 60 min than did either nylon. A linear relationship was shown to exist for a plot of the yield stress as a function of the log strain rate. The polyethylenes showed a sharp decrease in elongation as strain rate increased, whereas the nylon films were independent of the rate. The yield stress for the nylons decreased significantly as the temperature was increased from 20C to 110C.
