Abstract:

COC filters are signal processing devices that are comprised of a lossy, nonuinform delay line. They are used for time domain analysis of short, transient, non-periodic, analog signals and provide a three-dimensional description of the waveforms suitable for use in classification. Potential applications include analysis of sonar and radar signals, speech recognition and other tasks requiring pattern recognition of analog waveforms. This class of devices was developed from studies of the signal processing function of the hydromechanical action of the inner ear, which is known by the anatomical name cochlea. Design considerations, performance specifications, and circuit implementation of a 48 channel COC filter are presented in this report. The instrument operates on a bandwidth of 50 to 20,000 Hz.
