Abstract:

This report describes the research and development program related to developing a prototype model of a single color electrostatic image reproducer for quantity printing of multicolor topographic maps and navigational charts by successive passes through the device. The reproducer is based on a novel process in which a photoconductor coated screen is employed to control the flow of ion current in accordance with a projected optical image, thus forming a charge image on dielectric coated paper. The latent electrostatic image is subsequently dry toned using a magnetic carrier and the toned image fixed by passing over a heated roller. Problems associated with operational screen life led to a modification of the EIR to a charge transfer system employing a selenium coated photoconductor receptor roller on which the electrostatic charge image is formed and ultimately transferred to dielectric coated paper for subsequent toning and fixing as before. The charge transfer process and modifications to the EIR are discussed in the Addendum Report. Feasibility for designing a multicolor map reproducer based on the charge transfer system of operation was firmly established. Author
