Water Usage and Wastewater Characterization at a Corps of Engineers Recreation Area.

Abstract:

The lack of adequate design criteria and guidance for the provision of water and wastewater treatment systems at recreation areas has, in many cases, resulted in hydraulically and organically overdesigned facilities. In recognition of these deficiencies and as part of the Corps Wastewater Management Program, the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station WES conducted a field monitoring study to collect sufficient information on water usage, wastewater production, and waste characterizations. The objective of this effort was to develop guidance that will assist CE Districts in optimizing the design and operation of recreation area wastewater management systems.
