Improved Manganese Phosphate Coatings

reportActive / Technical Report | Accession Number: ADA018131 | Open PDF

Abstract:

Work was conducted to determine the mechanism by which superior manganese phosphate coatings are produced. The phosphate coatings were applied at temperatures above 212 F and with manganese-organic compounds added to the phosphating solution. Experimental baths and solubility studies have shown that the manganese concentration in the bath is critical and that the main function of the manganese-organic compounds is to increase the manganese concentration. The necessity of a processing temperature higher than 212 F has been attributed to an exponential increase in the reaction rate constant with temperature for the conversion of manganese dihydrogen phosphate MnH2PO42 to manganese phosphate Mn3PO42.
