Control of 'Streptococcus mutans' Infections in Naval Personnel during Routine Treatment.
Abstract:
The prevalence of dental caries in U.S. military populations is practically 100 and current caries prevention programs are inadequate. Dental caries is an infectious and transmissible disease and current evidence indicates that Streptococcus mutans is one of the prime etiologic agents. Restoration of carious lesions and application of topical stannous fluoride solution are effective but incomplete measures for controlling S. mutans infections in navy personnel. Additional mechanical and chemical measures may be employed to more effectively eliminate S. mutans from dental plaque.
