Composite Fabrication with Graphite-Reinforced Polysulfone Prepreg Tape.
Abstract:
Graphite-reinforced polysulfone composites were fabricated from three inch wide Hercules 3004-AS prepreg tape. Mechanical properties of these composites were evaluated at R. T., 250F, and 300F. Humid aging tests performed at 120F and 95 R.H. show polysulfoneAS composite properties equal to, or superior than, epoxyAS composites at test temperatures up to 250F. Processing studies indicated that quality laminates can be prepared at pressures as low as 100-200 psi. Finally, unnotched charpy testing revealed that polysulfoneAS composites possess higher damage threshold levels due to a better fiber-to-matrix bond than do epoxyAS composites. This strength makes polysulfone composites very desirable in aircraft component applications where the risk of foreign object damage is high.
