Abstract:

Research was conducted to obtain adsorption data for water vapor on Fiberglas-E in order to understand the thermodynamical nature of adsorbate-adsorbent interfaces. A modification of Polanyis potential theory considers changes of the nature of the adsorbent surface, eliminating controversial previous modifications of Polanyis potential theory. The BET method was used to obtain the specific surface areas of E-glass. Surface free-energy of wetting was computed from the adsorption isotherm data depending upon temperature, surface geometry, and sample treatment. The isosteric heat of adsorption and entropy of adsorption were also computed from various adsorption isotherms. Seven adsorption isotherms have been completed. Calculation of isosteric heat of adsorption indicates the adsorbed state is between the solid and the liquid state - equivalent to the loss of one vibrational and one translational degree of freedom.
