Diabetes and Military Service

Abstract:

Slightly more than 1 percent of the active duty population are diagnosed with diabetes. The rate remained stable from 2006-2010 and diagnosis is more common as age increases. Type 2 diabetes is more common. Of active duty service members diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, the mean age at diagnosis is 35.2 years old with an average 13.6 years of military service at time of diagnosis. Similar risk factors are comparative to the general US population.
