Follistatin: A Potential Anabolic Treatment for Re-innervated Muscle

Abstract:

Follistatin is a possible anabolic treatment for denervation atrophy induced muscle weakness following prolonged denervation. Follistatin DNA treatment seemed to have both anabolic and neurotrophic effects when administered after nerve repair following prolonged 6-month temporary denervation. Follistatin protein treatment was not associated with improved recovery though both protein and DNA treatments stimulated regenerative satellite cells. These observations are encouraging and warrant further investigation.
