Abstract:

The Three-Dimensional Wind Field 3DWF model developed by the US Army Research Laboratory ARL is based on the mass conservation principle and produces a high-resolution wind field over complex terrain. A user-friendly graphical user interface GUI that relies on Microsoft Internet Explorers ActiveX controls has also been implemented to facilitate use of the model. Although ActiveX controls offer the most convenient method for a webpage designer to develop a GUI that needs to access local data files and to run executable programs directly from the GUI, ActiveX controls have unfortunately been a significant source of security problems. These security problems have recently caused ARL to disable this feature. In addition, it was realized that potential customers may not be able to operate the distributed package if their sites also prohibit the use of ActiveX controls. Therefore, it is essential to create an alternate version of the 3DWF GUI package that does not rely on the use of Internet Explorers ActiveX controls. This report documents such efforts and other improvements to the original 3DWF GUI.
